United and Spurs have been involved in plenty of thrilling encounters over the years, including that memorable match in 2001 when the Reds overturned a 3-0 half-time deficit to win 5-3. However, two arguably more important clashes occurred in 1999 and 2003.
In May 1999, the Reds headed into the final game of the season just one point clear of Arsenal. Spurs took a shock early lead at Old Trafford, but goals from David Beckham and Andy Cole either side of half-time handed the Reds the title in dramatic fashion.
Four years later, the venue was White Hart Lane and goals from Paul Scholes and Ruud van Nistelrooy ensured the Gunners were left five points behind United with just three games to play.
An inspired performance from Spurs stopper Kasey Keller had kept the home side in the hunt until the 69th minute… and the visiting supporters frustrated. The American seemed to have waged a personal battle against van Nistelrooy as he denied him time and time again. In the end, however, Ruud found the net during injury-time and United celebrated a vital away win.
