Goals from Zat Knight and Gabriel Agbonlahor condemned Chelsea to their first defeat of the season at Villa Park on Sunday.

New signing Knight headed a debut goal two minutes after the restart, before Agbonlahor wrapped things up in the 88th minute, stabbing home Ashley Young's driven cross.

Over at Ewood Park, a 13th minute goal from Benni McCarthy was enough to give Blackburn Rovers victory over Manchester City.

Earlier, Arsenal ran out 3-1 winners over Portsmouth thanks to goals from Emmanuel Adebayor, Cesc Fabregas and Tomas Rosicky. The victory put them level on points with Premier League leaders Liverpool who, twenty four hours earlier, had charged to the top of the table with a thumping victory over struggling Derby County at Anfield.

Goals from Xavi Alonso (2), Fernando Torres (2), Ryan Babel and Andriy Voronin gave Rafa Benitez's side a 6-0 stroll over the Rams.

Fellow Merseysiders Everton are also tied on the top of the table, having snatched a 2-1 victory at Bolton through Joleon Lescott's late header.

Spurs were denied a morale-boosting victory after surrendering a two-goal lead at Fulham. Diomansy Kamara sealed a point for the Cottagers with an injury-time overhead kick.

There was also late drama at St James' Park, where Michael Owen struck three minutes from time to give Newcastle a 1-0 victory over Wigan, who had Kevin Kilbane dismissed in the second half.

West Ham notched an impressive 3-0 victory at Reading, thanks to goals from Craig Bellamy and Matthew Etherington (2).

Middlesbrough enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 victory over Birmingham City at the Riverside Stadium, thanks to first-half strikes from David Wheater and Stewart Downing.
