Keane bolsters Black Cats

Keane bolsters Black CatsRoy Keane has added former United team-mate Danny Higginbotham to his Sunderland squad ahead of Saturday's return to Old Trafford.

The former Reds skipper has also signed striker Kenwyne Jones and former Leeds defender Ian Harte, taking his total to 12 new summer signings.

Higginbotham arrived at the Stadium of Light in a £3million deal from Stoke City, and Keane was delighted to secure the services of the defender, who left Old Trafford for Derby County in 2000.

Keane told the official Sunderland website: "I'm pleased that, after long negotiations, we've signed a player of Danny's quality.

"I know him peronally and he's a great character. He can play at centre-half or left-back so his versatility will be a big plus for us."

Higginbotham is the sixth former United player to join the Black Cats under Keane's management, following Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Paul McShane, Liam Miller and Kieran Richardson.

The Old Trafford influence is apparent behind the scenes too, with coaches Raimond van der Gouw, Neil Bailey, Mike Clegg and former Chief Scout Mick Brown all part of the Stadium of Light staff.
